About IPL

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light treatment which is a non invasive procedure used for dermatological and cosmetic purposes. IPL utilises high-intensity pulses of broad-spectrum light to target specific skin concerns and conditions. IPL is different from laser treatments, as it uses multiple wavelengths of light instead of a single, focused beam.

IPL is used for a number of different reasons:

  1. Skin Rejuvenation: IPL can help improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and promote collagen production, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

  2. Sun Damage and Pigmentation: It can target and reduce sunspots, age spots, freckles, and other forms of hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure.

  3. Rosacea: IPL can help alleviate the redness and flushing associated with rosacea by targeting the dilated blood vessels responsible for the condition.

  4. Acne: IPL treatment can be used to target the bacteria causing acne and reduce inflammation, leading to improved skin clarity.

  5. Hair Removal: IPL can effectively reduce hair growth by targeting and damaging hair follicles, leading to a gradual reduction in hair density.

What happens during the appointment?

During an IPL treatment session, a handheld device is applied to the skin's surface, emitting short bursts of intense light. The light is absorbed by specific targets in the skin, such as melanin (for pigmented lesions) or hemoglobin (for blood vessels). The heat generated by the absorbed light then damages the targeted cells or structures, stimulating the body's natural healing process.

IPL treatments are typically performed in a series of sessions to achieve optimal results. The number of sessions required may vary depending on the specific skin concern being addressed and the individual's skin type.

What will it feel like?

While the procedure is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience mild prickling discomfort or a slight warming sensation during treatment. However, methods of cooling will be used by your therapist to alleviate any discomfort and enhance the overall experience.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Common side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, or mild discomfort, which usually subside within a few days after the procedure. You can treat this using aloe vera gel to sooth any soreness. It is essential to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by the therapist to ensure optimal healing and to protect the skin from sun exposure.

Will I see results straight away?

In most cases, you may notice some immediate changes in your skin after an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment, but the full results usually become more apparent over time with multiple sessions. For example, the full benefits of IPL skin rejuvenation, which involves stimulating collagen production and improving skin texture, may take several weeks to become noticeable. As collagen gradually increases, you may observe improvements in skin smoothness, reduction in fine lines, and a more youthful appearance over time. The specific outcomes and the timeline for seeing results can vary depending on the condition being treated and individual factors, such as skin type and the severity of the issue. Generally, a series of IPL sessions spaced several weeks apart is recommended for achieving the best outcomes.
